Gulf World Receives 30 Cold-Stunned Sea Turtles

Today, Gulf World Marine Institute (GWMI) received 30 cold-stunned sea turtles from the New England cold. With the help of our Specialists and Veterinarians these turtles will be rehabilitated in the center to be able to reintegrate them into their habitat later.

Sea turtles are reptiles whose body temperature is very close to the temperature of their surroundings. During cold snaps, turtles can become stunned when temperatures in shallow bays and estuaries drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Due to the large number of stranded turtles, the New England Aquarium and the National Sea Life Center reached out to other members of the stranding network for assistance. Over the next few weeks or months, GWMI will continue to rehabilitate these animals until FWC and National Marine Fisheries Service deem them releasable.
