Our Gulf World Marine Institute (GWMI) reintegrated a subadult sea turtle into the Gulf of Mexico. On the morning of May 5 we received the news that Hy was accidentally caught by a local fisherman. The event occurred at the Russell-Fields City pier, luckily the PCB lifeguards and the assistance of the dock administration, Hy was rescued and counted on the medical rehabilitation of GMWI.
Hy found herself with obstructive wounds, had a hook in her right front fin, another hook in her mouth and finally one in her intestine. The external hooks were removed with medical assistance. After a while, Hy removed the hooks in her intestine herself. Her recovery was rapid, her appetite abundant and her medical results indicated that she was ready to return to her habitat.
Thanks to GWMI’s assistance and follow-up, Hy had a successful rehabilitation and was reintegrated back into the Gulf of Mexico with the collaboration of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
