Cancun, Quintana Roo, March 20th, 2024- Dolphin Discovery, a brand of habitats for interaction with marine mammals of The Dolphin Company family, a park operator with a global presence, announced that its parks in Isla Mujeres and Cozumel were reaccredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) for having the highest standards of animal care.
The AZA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, education, and science. All AZA accredited zoos and aquariums must meet the highest standards in animal care and well-being and provide a fun, safe and, educational family experience.
Species conservation and education are two pillars that AZA-accredited institutions must keep in mind in their activities. This can be seen in the habitats of Dolphin Discovery Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, which are characterized by their efforts to preserve the manatee, an endangered species. They also stand out for their environmental education program, Loving is Educating, through which they have raised awareness among thousands of boys, girls, adolescents, and adults about the importance of caring for species, bringing them closer to these species through interactions, and offering free tours in their facilities.
“Being accredited by an organization as important as the AZA is a reflection of our commitment, first and foremost, to our specimens by providing them with the best medical care, the best food, outstanding enrichment programs, adequate facilities, among many other aspects necessary to their complete well-being, and with our guests, by offering fun and educational interactions that turn them into ambassadors of the oceans, so that they are aware of the importance of animal and environment care” said Guillermo Sánchez, Chief Veterinary Officer at The Dolphin Company.
To be accredited by the AZA, Dolphin Discovery in Isla Mujeres and Cozumel had to undergo thorough inspection visits that evaluated aspects such as the animal’s physical and psychological well-being, health program, size of the areas assigned to them, habitat conservation and education program, and many others.
