Gulf World Restores a Stunned Cold Turtle

Our Gulf World Marine Institute reintegrated one of this season’s cold-stunned Kemp’s ridley sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico to St. George Island State Park in Franklin County on May 16 at 11:00 a.m. ET.

During cold snaps, sea turtles can become cold-stunned due to temperatures below 50 degrees. This Kemp’s ridley sea turtle was only one of hundreds stranded along the Cape Cod coast and only thirty of these sea turtles were immediately transported from Quincy, MA to Panama City Beach, FL to GWMI for continued rehabilitation.

This turtle has been medically cleared by GWMI veterinary staff for reintegration by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The public is invited to attend these types of events, which are of utmost importance to us, remembering that all sea turtle reintegration events are subject to change in the event of poor weather conditions.

We thank each of the GWMI organizations and volunteers for coordinating, rescuing, transporting and dedicating their time to each of the marine species because without them this would not be possible.
